Little Sugar Creek Comments
I grew up near this creek and have participated on the Little Sugar Creek Action Committee for many years both as a county commissioner and as a legislator. So this particular project is very special to me.
In fact, when I sometimes wonder why I stay in politics, I look at this beautifully restored creek and remember that all those votes and meetings produced something lasting and worthwhile!
It’s encouraging that so many of our citizens are discovering and using the greenways for healthy recreation and as a viable transportation option.
This Kings Dr. portion was also a unique opportunity to partner with a private developer to create a seamless project that is both public and private…the Metropolitan. The investment by Pappas Properties in this location has brought even more energy and life to a once tired part of our city. Replacing Midtown Square with a new and exciting multi-use project has served as an attractive and significant greenway destination. We will be on-going partners in the Metropolitan.
There is much talk these days of Economic Stimulus, this project provides its own economic stimulus. From retail to restaurants, the businesses near the greenway have an added incentive to hang on during tough economic times. People will come to this special place and support the nearby businesses.
And here we are, recognizing that Little Sugar Creek Greenway is important not just to our Charlotte community. It is significant to our entire region as part of the Carolina Thread Trail! The uncapping and restoration of this stream is something we have needed for years. I am glad to be here today… And so is the Director of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, my tireless friend and creek advocate, Dave Canaan. Dave, come share a few words.
